Natural VS Artificial Grass. Which Should You Choose?

Since the beginning of time, there have been certain debates that have divided people, nearing the top of the list: Natural grass or artificial turf.

In fact, believe it or not, artificial turf is becoming more and more popular. There are a few reasons as to why, one being the low maintenance tag. But low maintenance and no maintenance are very, very different things.

So before you make the leap and commit to a garden made of artificial grass that you have to hoover instead of mow. We’ve pulled together a list of pros and cons for both turf options!

Natural Grass

Some people are dubious of artificial grass and prefer the look and feel of natural turf. For these, turf rolls are often used to restore run-down lawns. There’s little that beats the feeling of healthy, springy grass under your feet.

A healthy cared for lawn can also help you and your family both mentally and physically, creating a more relaxing environment and offering a place for physical activities for your family, or enticing your children outside to play in this ever increasing digital age.

What are the benefits:

  • Habitat for insects.

  • One acre of grass produces more oxygen than an acre of rainforest.

  • Absorbs carbon from the atmosphere.

However...

The initial appearance of natural turf may be perfect but you still have to contend with muddy footprints, weather restrictions and colouration deflects. Not to mention the need for a speedy installation, excessive cost, limited choice, high care regime and restricted usage over the first month to allow the natural turf to bond.

Natural grass turf is a good option for those who have the time to dedicate to watering, seeding and mowing. This is critical to avoiding falling back to square one of a costly process!

Artificial Grass

The advances in modern manufacturing have made artificial grass turf extremely difficult to tell apart from natural grass. Giving you a perfectly manicured lawn without the backache. Making perfect sense for those who struggle with mobility or non-gardeners.

What are the benefits:

  • Looks amazing all year round.

  • Requires little ongoing maintenance.

  • No pollen count.

  • Child and pet friendly.

  • Versatile in use.

However...

Often people believe the main advantage of artificial turf is that it will last a longer time, when in fact this is not entirely true. Although artificial turf is partially made from recycled materials, it is not completely biodegradable and is expected to last 15 - 25 years. Potentially leaving behind a mess. In contrast to this real seeded turf will admittedly require more maintenance.

The rigorous upkeep of natural grass can become beyond our capabilities or simply undesirable. With an effortless hose down being enough to keep your artificial grass turf looking fabulous, it's the go-to option for easy, stress-free gardening.
